Vancouver Builds Toward 2010 Olympics
The Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Whistler face a worsening skilled-labor shortage and rising prices for concrete and other materials. The increasing costs, fueled by a $70 billion British Columbia construction spree, have ignited huge controversy with the public, and some officials.
Accommodations in Whistler and in Vancouver are already blocking out rooms to ensure availability. Some may already be jacking up prices of the home owner and hotel accommodations. The costs for accommodations, and facilities for the Olympic games just keeps on rising. Is this just the start of local Whistler and Vancouver businesses to take advantage of the games by jacking up prices? Well, bottom line, whatever the city and officials spend on these games for facilities and accommodations, Maureen Douglas, community relations director in Whistler said it right - ”You either turn this 17-day event into 17 years of prosperity, or — if people choose to gouge a consumer — you spend 17 years making up your reputation.” So true, so true.
