Go Green at Your Whistler Rental
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, it was hard to go anywhere without hearing or seeing the phrase Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. The message with those three R words was clear: our planet is suffering thanks to our abundance of trash and our carefree nature that habitually and nonchalantly disposes of it. In the beginning of those days of global awareness, we focused more of our conservation efforts towards recycling. While the global population has made some progress through those efforts, today’s environmentalists are more concerned with the first of those three little words: Reduce. More specifically, reducing our carbon footprint. Turn on the news or listen to the radio and you’re sure to hear the latest recommendations for what we can do individually to reduce our impact on our environment; to improve, or even begin our efforts to live a green lifestyle. And in some parts of the world, such as Whistler BC Canada, community councils are enforcing fines to people who carelessly add to the world’s carbon footprint.
When you check-in or unload at your Whistler rental property this year, be sure to turn off your car’s engine. Allowing your vehicle to idle longer than 3 minutes can cost you a $65 fine according to a new bylaw passed by the Whistler council. The fine may seem ridiculous and excessive to some, but to many, it’s nothing compared to the cost to clean up our air. According to Canada’s Federal Office of Energy Efficiency, if drivers reduced idle times by 5 minutes each day, they would put 4500 less tonnes of greenhouse-gas emissions per year into the environment. Individually, it doesn’t seem like much of an impact. But, when you multiply that by the number of visitors to Whistler Mountains each year, the impact on the environment could be huge.
So turn off that engine when you unpack your car on your next Whistler vacation. Think of it as your way of helping Whistler Canada maintain its beauty for your future visits to the region.
