Whistler Blackcomb Receives No.1 Resort And Parks Rankings From Transworld Snowboarding Magazine ReadersOnthesnow.com readers rank Whistler Blackcomb their favourite North American resort
TransWorld SNOWBoarding Magazine readers have named Whistler Blackcomb the best overall resort in North America for a third year in a row; have given its Nintendo Terrain Parks the coveted No. 1 designation in the Top Ten Best Parks category; and have named Whistler Blackcomb Top 5 in an additional nine categories
“Whistler Blackcomb’s unstoppable three-year winning streak in the overall resort category is a reflection of the undisputable awesome factors at work: fast direct lifts, consistent snowfall, challenging terrain, and a perfect park,” says TransWorld SNOWboarding Editor Annie Fast. “The legendary snowboard scene and stacked après options don’t hurt. I love that our readers get it so right.”
Whistler Blackcomb’s Nintendo Terrain Parks have long sought after the prestigious title of Best Park and have consistently moved up the rankings, from No. 5 in 2006, to No.2 in 2007 and now to No. 1 in 2008.
“Terrain Parks are like orchestras, they combine the artistic talents of the park rangers, the park groomers and the input from the audience – which, in our case, are the local riders and international guests,” says Whistler Blackcomb Nintendo Terrain Park supervisor, Brian Finestone. “As the park supervisor, I just listen to the music and tweak the talent to get the best product out of what we have to work with, I’m basically just the guy at the front waving the stick around. On behalf of the entire parks crew I would like to thank TransWorld SNOWboarding Magazine for recognizing our hard work last year.”
Not satisfied to rest on their laurels, the parks crew continues to innovate. Nintendo Terrain Park rangers have come up with a creative and environmentally responsible way to enhance their arsenal of jib features by cutting up and re-welding old rails. The terrain parks department has spent $40,000 this year on building new rails and re-designing old ones. Rangers are also constructing new industrial-style features out of old PEAK 2 PEAK construction materials, such as two giant spools that housed nearly 100 metric tonnes of cable each.
Park enthusiasts can look forward to 100+ jib features this season – a Nintendo Terrain Park best. This year, park skiers and riders will also experience unprecedented terrain park access with the launch of the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola, which opens December 12, 2008. In just 11 minutes, they will be transported from Whistler to Blackcomb – and park gate to park gate – to experience all five Nintendo Terrain Parks and the Superpipe in one day without having to stay on one mountain. The parks crew will consistently tweak the parks on both mountains to keep things interesting.
The online TransWorld SNOWboarding Magazine Resort Poll saw 1,600 readers log on to cast their votes, ranking a total of 154 North American resorts in 21 categories. Whistler Blackcomb also received No. 1 rankings for Best Terrain Variety, Best Vibe, Best Lifts and Best Challenge, while making it to the Top 5 in the categories of Best Nightlife (No. 2), Best On-Mountain Food (No. 2), Best Lodging (No. 2), Best Snow Quality (No.3), and Best Pipe (No. 5).
Earlier this year, Whistler Blackcomb also received the designation of North America’s favorite ski resort by visitors of OnTheSnow.com, a popular online snow sports portal. The website, which attracts a Nielsen-audited 1.2 million unique monthly visitors during the winter, gave its visitors the opportunity to write reviews of all resorts in North America and they chose Whistler Blackcomb as their favourite.
Opening day is November 27, 2008 and snow has already started to blanket the high alpine. Guests who book by November 15 can receive up to 33 per cent off their holiday. For more information, visit whistlerblackcomb.com.
