Through Rain Hail Sleet and Snow The Olympics Must Go On
Canada continued its massive medal haul on Saturday, with the Canadian men’s curling team, snowboarder Jasey Jay Anderson and the men’s pursuit speed skaters’ team all winning gold, driving our total to 13 top finishes. This ties us for the most gold any country has won in the history of the winter Olympics. If our men can win the hockey game on Sunday, we will finally set a record we can be proud of!
In curling, skip Kevin Martin and his men defeated Norway 6-3 in 10 ends to take the gold, this team was expected to win from the start of the Olympics. But expectations don’t always come true. Luckily, this time they did!
On the mountain, amid rain and heavy fog, Anderson thrilled the crowd as he raced past Austria’s Benjamin Karl to win gold in the Olympic men’s snowboarding parallel giant slalom. There were times when we couldn’t even see him. How he managed to hit his mark and cut those curves was amazing.
Anderson, with a slower time in the first run, had to start with a slight time delay, but he made up ground quickly in the middle of the track and finished a few board lengths ahead of Karl who took the silver.
He was in shock, “I had so much time to make up, and in these conditions it’s virtually impossible,” said Anderson.
The Canadian team of Denny Morrison, Lucas Makowsky and Mathieu Giroux beat the U.S. in the men’s team pursuit final. Crossing the finish line a mere 21-hundredths of a second at the Richmond Olympic Oval.
The final full day of events was much like the first, weather wise. But, true athletes strive in adversity and today we saw what our true Canadian athletes are capable of.
To complicate matters even more, the earthquake in Chili brought about tsunami threats for the west coast. Combining the excitement of the games with a fear of devastation and grief for the tragedy stricken country. Many Canadians have friends and relatives living in Chili. With communications down, they had no way of knowing how their loved ones were holding up. If at all.
