What is Gran Fondo
A Gran Fondo, roughly translated, means big ride. It is a massive cycling event that has enjoyed immense popularity in Europe for several decades. The craze is catching on quite rapidly in North America. Last year the RBC Gran Fondo in Whistler was the first Gran Fondo held in Canada.
The rides are usually about 100 km long and include cyclists of all skill levels. Competitive cyclists enjoy the event as much as amateurs looking to challenge their abilities. This is not a race, but top riders are often given recognition.
Categories
There are 3 categories:
Gran Fondo – traveling within a dedicated lane, riders cover the entire 120 km between Vancouver and Whistler. The extreme challenge of the course includes more than 2000 meters up hill.
Medio - a bit shorter at 60 km, but still quite challenging. The difficult hills are all in the second half of the course.
Giro – this category is a competitive race not well suited for amateurs. You need to be a top rider in excellent physical condition. The full 120 km is covered at racing speeds.
Even if you are not a racer and are only here as a spectator, you are guaranteed a thrill. And the end of the day, you can relax in your private hot tub, enjoy a movie or just take in the beautiful mountain views. Whistler is definitely the place to be this weekend!
